Until Further Notice
There's nothing like taking exams in a subject to disrupt one's interest in it! Currently I'm going through an intense period of apathy when it comes to politics. Blogging is far from my mind. So, after some careful consideration, I have decided to suspend this blog for a while, and concentrate on the more mundane aspects of life; mainly attempting to save up some money for my impending move to London to work in Parliament for a year.

My year group is, unfortunately, going in the last year MPs are not obliged to pay their interns even a minimum wage. As I have no idea if I'll be one of the lucky ones, and get some pin money despite this, I have to assume the worst for now. And since a number of my fellow future-interns are only being given half loans by the Student Loans Company, I'll admit I'm having nightmares about my future cash situation.

So all my energy is now going to go into getting another job and selling all my worldly possessions on eBay. Blogging just can't come into it. This radio silence may last weeks, or it may last months (unless a miracle occurs and I get some big scoop of course). I'll definitely be back before joining the Westminster crowd at least. I hasten to add that, this blog certainly isn't going anywhere, but I'll understand if anyone wants to remove me from their blogroll for a while, since it's going to be inactive.

Toodle pipski folks. I'll definitely be back.

Can anyone explain to me, in words of 1 syllable, why students only get half-loans from the Student Loans Company when the internship year is part of their course? Especially when London is so expensive? I am a pensioner and Martine's father has passed away, She will be mad at me for this, but HELP! Who wants to see Martine lost to politics!

Mum, thanks. But don't worry I'll find a way.

Tom, 'fraid it is! Blogging doesn't pay. And since I got the dreaded news through the post today that, yes, apparently the Student Loans Company think I'll be able to survive in london on £3610 for a year, no option but to devote my time to nefarious money making schemes now.

Now I sell, work and investigate all the charities I can to try and find the money to live through it. And then, and only then, will blogging be back on the menu.

Needs must as the devil drives, and all that.

But thanks for commenting, my friend!

It's a pity you'll be stopping blogging, Martine, but I understand why.

But at last you get some Student Loan - as a postgrad, I haven't been able to get any this year, and I have lived primarily off my savings - which are thus now all gone! Getting a job is currently on the top of my 'to do' list as well, but there just aren't any around - especially since I can only work part time as I am also writing a dissertation atm!

Even worse! Such a joke isn't it. And it's not easy finding a job at the moment, sadly, even when you don't have a dissertation to focus on.

Welcome to the land of opportunity!

I suspect that you found the competition in Hull just too overpowering...

Have you thought of taking up busking?

I find the cost of living in Hull relatively cheap. I don't know why they charge more for living in a dump like London...

Sorry to hear about your situation. Best wishes with the path ahead.

JHL - yes, yes that's it. Ever the astute one, I see.

I did indeed consider busking, since I'm hardly new to that, but I think a real job might be more profitable.

Hull is fantastically cheap. Unfortunately London is fantastically overrated.

No worries, my friend, I'm sure I'll find a way. And thanks for the well wishes!

Thanks! Ah but you know me, I'll find a way. In any case, I've enjoyed lending a hand so I'll look you up when I get back into Hull.

Jailhouselawyer - hey; Martine could always kill someone with an axe and then live at the taxpayers' expense for a few years the way you did you scumbag.

Good luck Martine. Hope it all goes well.

You're one busy girl, Martine.

I don't think it is fair that interms don't have to be paid - can anyone explain that to me?

Martine Martin said...
I'm afraid there isn't much explanation, Ellee. Only that politicians are all very committed to social mobility, except when its an issue in their back yard. That's the message I get.
